Technology choices for generative AI - Microsoft's investment into Australia

At InnovateGPT we're creating new generative AI businesses primarily running on Microsoft's Azure Open AI services. It means that the organisations using these services are getting the best blend of enterprise-ready cloud services and enterprise-ready generative AI services, within a framework that provides security, capacity and capability to use an organisation's own data in a generative AI solution with confidence.

Why Microsoft-first?

Although there's a more comprehensive answer, last week's announcement from Microsoft in Australia provides a compelling story about why their platform is an obvious choice. In the announcement on 24th October, at the Australian embassy in Washington DC, and alongside the prime minister, they announced:

  • Microsoft is investing a record A$5 billion to expand its AI and cloud computing infrastructure in Australia.

  • The investment aims to improve Australia's economic competitiveness, create jobs, and strengthen cybersecurity.

  • Over the next two years, Microsoft will expand its local data centre capacity by 250%, and footprint from 20 to 29 sites, including a 14.4 hectare, $1.3 billion data centre in Western Sydney

  • Microsoft is partnering with TAFE NSW to establish a Datacentre Academy to train Australians in cloud and AI skills.

  • Microsoft and the Australian Signals Directorate are collaborating on a cybersecurity initiative named the Microsoft-Australian Signals Directorate Cyber Shield (MACS).

  • The investment aligns with the Australian Government’s goal to fill 1.2 million tech-related jobs by 2030

  • Designing, building and running the data centres are all done within Microsoft's commitment to sustainability - with a carbon negative, water positive target by 2030.
